When you’re getting an MBA, if you use a 1 syllable word where you could use a 3 syllable word, you’ll have points taken off.
In the marketplace, if you use a 3 syllable word where you could use a 1 syllable word, you’ll lose points.
And in the market, points are dollars.
Have you ever started reading a book and by the 2nd page you’re thinking… this was not meant for me.
Or you’re in a conversation with someone and you’re like wow she must actually go to space, but really she’s in medical sales?
Like I straight up do not know what you’re talking about right now.
I’m so sure it’s a personal problem but it’s one that your prospects probably have to. And it can be tempting to say “not my circus, not my monkeys,” but their problems are yours to solve.
It’s not a flex for people to stare at you blankly while you explain what an ads manager does.
It feels like ~*oooooh I am very fancy and advanced, no one understands me*~ and you can be all of those things, but unfortunately you may also be broke if you don’t know how to simplify for your prospects.
MBA: Upper respiratory tract infection that is an acute, self-limited viral infection of the upper airway that also may involve the lower respiratory tract.
Money-Maker: Common Cold
MBA: A member of the genus Canis, likely descendant of the wolf, that has been domesticated by man since prehistoric times.
Money-Maker: Dog
MBA: Antibodies are a blood protein produced in response to and counteracting a specific antigen.
Money-Maker: Antibodies are y-shaped things that help fight sickness.
Don’t get me started on acronyms… ROAS? CTA? CRM? ACV?
Honey, we do not know what you’re talking about. And even if we do, you’re only saving 2 seconds by not saying the entire phrase.
You can’t do anything useful in 2 seconds, so just help a girl out!
The scary part is, most people aren’t even going to ask you for the definition, they’ll just stop listening.
Plain, simple language is key to removing barriers between you and your potential clients.
