What should I write about…
What style launch should we do next…
What will I wear…
What should we do about Uncle Bill…
What direction should the business pivot in…
There could be at least 10 answers to any of these questions we ask ourselves. So the VERY fun and unproductive thing to do is pine over it. Think through every possible scenario, not just once but a few times until even (!!), until you’re convinced there is no right answer and now you’re paralyzed.
We call it buffering.
Buffering can send an entire family off the deep end when your ESPN app does it, but is the most delightful part of then day when I do it.
I will scroll TikTok in search of answers because WHAT CHOICE DO I HAVE? I’ve been meaning to workout for weeks, now is the perfect time. Nothing can get me to fold laundry like having to make a decision.
Me when something is no longer fun to think about
At least that’s who I used to be. Until my boss and friend asked me a question that only had one answer.
I was furious. I saw my beloved buffering crumble right before my eyes. My screen time was shaking.
This is what she said:
“If you HAD to know… If you HAD to do something right now… If you HAD to!!!!… what would you do? Do that thing.”
OH you’re kidding. I am distraught.
I wish it wouldn’t have worked somehow so that I could continue doing everything except what needed to be done and tell her how unique and special and immune to principles of humanity I was.
But all that started happening was finding right answers quicker, knowing for sure what the wrong answers were and wasting less time than ever.
Action is the thing that breeds clarity, not thinking.
Think of a question or scenario you’ve been sitting with…
If you had to know what the answer was - what would it be?
Do that.
