10 Tips for Running Ads on Black Friday

I felt so fancy.

I worked at advertising agencies for over a decade, and they were my client at the time - and I was doing alllll their Google Ads and YouTube Ads and Shopping Ads in preparation for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

One of the cool things that happens when you spend a lot of money on Google Ads or Meta Ads is you get to have a dedicated contact at Google, Facebook, YouTube, etc. 

You get to work with someone who literally tells you exactly what to do for the ads to perform well, because they get paid like a Salesgirl... based on commission.

They weren’t gatekeeping and neither am I….

Here are 10 things to help your Black Friday - Cyber Monday Ads perform well:

Straight from the mouth of someone who helped a company generate over $1M+ in a weekend... 

1. Budget = I'd be prepared to spend more during these five to six days (Wednesday-Monday). If you have a $5,000 budget for November, you could spend $165/day all month. Or you could spend $1,000/day for 5 days when your audience's likelihood to buy is higher. Same money, same people, but higher intent to buy. 

2. Be Ready = You know how a cat could be half asleep and out of the corner of its eye it sees a mouse and could instantly pounce? You know how you see grandma's pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving and you instantly pounce? It's the same thing with your ads. There's a chance they perform really well during this period, so if they are profiting, BE READY to spend more. Set 15 mins each morning right when you wake up to take a quick peek and increase budgets.

3. Use an RTB = Humans are more likely to act when there is a reason to. RTB = Reason To Buy. The typical RTBs are urgency and scarcity. Urgency = sales ends Monday. Scarcity = 15 spots left. If you can and it makes sense for you, use both.

4. Communicate the RTB Everywhere = Communicate the RTB everywhere. Instagram stories, Reels. TikTok. Your website. Emails. Everywhere. You think you're being obnoxious but your audience is distracted. They might actually realize something is happening if you say it enough.

5. Competitors = Go see what they're doing. Don't copy them. Learn from them.

6. Ad Variety = Have you read the 5 love languages? Have you heard of the different buying styles? I like hugs, whereas hugs may make you claustrophobic. I like to be sold to, you may like to feel like it was your idea. Some people like static, simple ads. Others like stories. Whatever you do, spice it up.

7. Pour Gas on The Fire = Listen you know I'm the queen of paid ads. But if you use ads so that your ideal customers can find you, but your Instagram profile is a ghost town, you'll lose credibility. You don't have to post 24/7 or even every day (I don't, #thankGodforads). But when you marry paid ads WITH great content on your page, it's like pouring gasoline on the fire.

8. Diversify = You don't buy 1 stock at a time, do you? Don't put all your eggs in one ad basket. Multiple ads. Multiple channels. (Channels = Google, TikTok, YouTube, Meta, etc).

9. Reviews = Don't send people from your ad to a page that has no reviews. According to research from the Spiegel Research Center, "a product with five reviews is 270% more likely to be purchased compared to a product with no reviews." Go ask your clients ASAP for feedback.

10. Mean What You Say = Don't say "best price of the year" if that's a lie. Don't say "lowest price ever" if it's not. If you say the discount expires at midnight, be sure that it does. If you don't, you'll lose credibility.
