3 Myths About Hiring Freelancers from Upwork: BUSTED
From a Retired Aerospace Engineer Turned Business Ops Specialist
Upwork is an online freelancing platform that allows freelancers to find work and allows companies to connect with high-quality contractors.
If you’re a freelancer looking for work, or an executive looking to hire: you’re gonna want to read this.
Katie, retired aerospace engineer turned entrepreneur, signed up for an Upwork account in March of 2020.
Y’all remember what happened around that time, right?
I don’t want to talk about it.
Katie had just lost half of her income overnight at the small start up she was working for and was looking to just make some extra money to go towards daycare.
Me when I stop paying for daycare in 3 years.
As of this year, Katie will have made $1 MILLION dollars just from connections she’s made on Upwork.
But the jury is still very much out on the platform for many of you.
Biggest Myths About Using Upwork to Hire or Find Freelance Work:
#1. It’s Too Saturated
You have a point. There are thousands of freelancers with profiles. But there are also thousands of opportunities posted daily. Don’t focus on how many people are there, and focus on how YOU can stand out.
To get noticed, try this:
Apply early and often
Only apply for jobs with less than 10 proposals
Create a cover letter that is well-written, has persuasive language in it, and is easy to manipulate from job to job.
#2. There are Scams
Yes, there are scams. Someone’s grandma is getting scammed in Instagram DMs while you’re reading this. I wish it wasn’t true but it is.
Here is what to look for to avoid scams:
Verified payment method
They have successfully hired and paid a freelancer on Upwork before
They have good reviews
Their budget meets their needs
#3. You Can’t Find Quality Clients
Upwork is a place people turn to when they don't know where to go to hire someone, or they just want someone part time. And that is okay. Take advantage of that!
How to avoid disappointment:
Keep your expectations in check. If you find someone on Upwork who believes in your mission and would die for you, you guys can get an arrangement worked out. But, temporary and contractual work can be AMAZING for both the freelancer and the employer when you enter with the right mindset.
Connecting with new clients on Upwork gave Katie financial stability, helped her identify the type of work and types of clients she wanted to work with, and led her to creating the business she runs today.
