3 Strong Female Leads Are Inspiring to Women in Business
I’ve done extensive research (one single Google search) to find strong female characters who, in my opinion, would be a Certified Salesgirl.
Here’s what I found, and this feels really important so thank you for reading.
Jules Ostin, The Intern
Jules Ostin (played by Anne Hathaway) is the CEO and founder of About The Fit, an e-commerce fashion startup based out of Brooklyn. She started her company in her kitchen and built it into a 200-employee empire, including their old-school intern played by Robert DeNiro. It’s truly just as wholesome as it sounds.
From her female entrepreneurship journey to her fashion, Jules is the epitome of Salesgirl. She seems like a dream of a boss because of quotes like this, “It’s 2015, are we really still critical of working moms?” – It’s been NINE years since this movie came out, yet this quote is still relevant. And that is also why I think Jules would be here advocating for entrepreneurial moms everywhere.
Melanie Smooter, Sweet Home Alabama
I think part of the journey to becoming a Salesgirl is the reinvention we all go through when we step out on our own to pursue our passions. There’s a part of our old selves that we leave behind to chase after self-made success. That’s why Reese Witherspoon’s character Melanie in Sweet Home Alabama would be pursuing her entrepreneurial ventures with us.
“You know, I’ve really made something of myself. I have a career. People actually want to be me.”
Even though the movie is mostly about her love life, we see Melanie refusing to sacrifice her work for love. She’s ambitious, self-driven, and relentlessly following her dreams despite what her hometown might think of her – I’m almost positive that’s something we can all relate to…right? I can’t be the only one.
Joy Mangano, Joy
A true rags-to-riches story about Joy Marango, played by Jennifer Lawrence, who builds a million-dollar household industry empire. Joy gets the idea to develop a self-wringing mop she dubs the 'Miracle Mop” and it becomes a raving success with the help of QVC – the OG TikTok Shop for all you Gen Zers.
Joy discovers the business world is more cutthroat than she first thought. But she earns her way to self-made success by advocating for herself as a single mother and saying iconic things like, “Listen to me. Never speak, on my behalf, about my business again."
Petition for Court to put that exact quote on the next Salesgirl coffee mug** because YES MA’AM THAT’S RIGHT. 🫡
Honorable mentions for this list include, but are not limited to:
Barbie because duh.
Elle Woods because of all the things, but mainly her kind spirit and courage to prove naysayers wrong.
Olivia Pope just based on her wardrobe alone.
And Leslie Knope because she is the ultimate girl's girl.
When I started my search to find these iconic female entrepreneurs portrayed on tv, I came up short. It’s honestly disappointing because we should all be represented more on the big screen. This is why I’m starting another petition for Salesgirls to take over Hollywood.
Wish me luck.
