4 Reasons Rom-Coms Reign Surpreme

and the science to backup our longing for 90's Richard Gere

The romantic comedy, lovingly dubbed rom-com, has been in a drought since the early 2000’s when we were last gifted cinematic masterpieces like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and 13 Going on 30.

The genre had been proclaimed dead by many critics after a few big flops and accusations of being overly “predictable” and “cheesy.”

(I’m thinking yes, and????)

It wasn’t until 2021 that people started looking around asking, “where’d all the rom-coms go???”

Nothing will have you missing a predictable storyline and young Julia Roberts like simply living through 2020, am I right?

She carried the genre as long as she could

I am happy to report… the drought is over.

I streamed Irish Wish on Netflix this weekend.

I would say no spoilers but you will almost certainly know everything that’s going to happen within the first 30 minutes.

Is it going to win any Academy Awards? No. Was there even 1 element of surprise? Also no.

Will I be tickled to watch it again? Absolutely

It got me wondering… why in the world did I just spend 90 minutes watching that, why am I elated and why do I wish I was watching another one right now? Turns out, I’m not just corny. It’s science.

4 Ways Your Brain Benefits From A Good Rom-Com:

#1. The Off-Screen Chemistry

Oh, we’re watching My Best Friend’s Wedding? Congrats! Your brain’s empathy center is now activated and ordering release of oxytocin and dopamine, which make you feel like YOU are the one walking down the aisle to Dermont Mulroney. Those “happy hormones” result in overall feelings of positivity and well-being. A sci-fi flick could never.

#2. Sweet Dreams

Watching Father of the Bride before bed can actually prevent insomnia. Romantic comedies are known for their happy endings, even when they’re sometimes a little (or a lot) predictable. Ending the night with that positive resolution can help close any lingering open loops in your head. George and Nina Banks dancing in the empty house after Annie’s wedding? All is right in the world. Goodnight!

#3. Laughter is Medicine

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in You’ve Got Mail is exactly what the doctor ordered. Consistently allowing yourself a good laugh can improve your immune system, relieve pain and lower your blood pressure. More immediate effects include stimulating circulation and muscle relaxation… I’m sold on giggles.

#4. Forget-Me-Not

I fear I will be 102 years old, still quoting Love & Basketball. When those “happy hormones” are pumped out during rom-coms, the moments can imprint on your brain. This is why you’re likely able to recall so many lines from your favorite films. “So I can kiss you anytime I want…” Helllllo, name that movie! This process is not only great for annoying your spouse, it also boosts your long-term memory in general.

So go fire up 10 Things I Hate About You for the 100th time, or mark your calendars for the new rom-coms coming out in 2024.

I like my hotels to have 5 stars, and I like my romantic comedies to have no more than 3.
