One of the first questions people ask me when I tell them I’m a copywriter is, “So how do you feel about AI?” and my answer is always some variation of, “I don’t know yet, I’m still learning about it.” 

The more I look into AI resources the more I view it as a tool to use to my advantage rather than a threat to my career. 

I’ve started using ChatGPT when I’m experiencing a major writer's block and need a boost to get started on a project. To be fully transparent, I used ChatGPT to spark the idea for the content you’re reading right now. SUE ME.

My mind was a complete blank when I sat down to start writing this newsletter so I opened ChatGPT and asked for, “newsletter topics about copywriting”.

I’ve also prompted it to write clever headlines for some of my clients and the results were so comically bad that if you told me Tyra Banks character in the movie Life-Size was the brains behind ChatGPT, I would have absolutely zero follow up questions. 

I can’t tell you what to do, but I’m here to kindly offer suggestions for how it could save you valuable time, energy, and brain power.

- Write a caption for your next social media post.

- Write a script for cold calling potential clients.

- Write a script for a reel.

- Come up with social media post ideas.

- Give you prompts for your next newsletter series (i.e. give me 10 newsletter topics about _______.)

- Find articles, podcasts, and resources for your business.

Warning: You will most likely not get a perfectly written caption or script. You’ll still need to make edits so it sounds more like your voice. But when you’re feeling stuck or uninspired it’s always helpful to find inspiration where you can. Even if that inspiration is imperfect.   

There are still a lot of unknowns about AI and how it impacts our jobs, but what I can say with confidence is that no piece of technology will ever be able to fully replace what you and I have to offer.

Just think about all of the times you answered a call from a random number (so brave!) only to find that it was an automated voice informing you of your car's expired warranty. I’m willing to bet most of us hang up immediately because we don’t want to talk to robots, we want to connect with real people.

I don’t know about you, but when it comes to the future of AI and my writing career I simply refuse to let a non-living, unemotional, non-tax-paying robot keep me awake at night scared it’s going to take my job.

Instead, I’m choosing to lean in and stay curious and laugh at its failed attempts to replace my unique voice and creativity.
