“Progressively spookier but almost always happy...”
- a description of my entire life and also this movie list
#1. You’ve Got Mail (1998)
Your essential fall romantic comedy, enjoyed best in the biggest sweatshirt you own.
*Not streaming for free right now which is a crime to humanity.
#2. How Harry Met Sally (1989)
Michael Myers < Meg Ryan, I don’t make the autumn girl rules.
*Also not streaming for free, which begs the question: why does no one want us to be happy?
#3. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
Ever wanted to experience high school again from a safe distance and without your mid-30’s back pain? Turn 17 again as soon as you press play.
#4. Matilda (1996)
The musical was fine, but doesn’t make this list. 1996 version or bust.
#5. Little Women (2019)
Ironically this also makes the Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year and Valentine’s Day lists.
#6. A Knight’s Tale (2001)
Love, action, whimsy, a bomb soundtrack, friendship, Heath Ledger in his prime - A Knight’s Tale has it all.
#7. Father of the Bride (1991)
Steve Martin is so good in this classic I might name my first born after him (I did). Nancy Myers aesthetic is so October golden hour.
#8. Love and Basketball (2000)
Not streaming for free right now (hello, 911?!) but worth paying for, Bighead.
#9. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you… Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.
#10. The Greatest Showman (2017)
For a better life, watch once a month starting now and ending never.
#11. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Until we get the long-awaited sequel (officially confirmed!!!), we’ll keep watching the original (over and over again).
#12. Good Will Hunting (1998)
A heart-warming story of potential, and proof that you can enjoy movie night and feel inspired at the same time.
#13. Stardust (2007)
I can’t believe we don’t talk about this movie more. The Halloween spirit is defrosting…
#14. Enola Holmes (2020)
Millie Bobby Brown slays as Sherlock’s little sis in this Netflix original.
#15. October Sky (1999)
A content gold mine, straight from the coal mine. The leaves are officially turning by this point in the list.
#16. Remember the Titans (2000)
There aren’t enough tissues and somehow I keep coming back?
#17. Runaway Bride (1999)
The perfect movie to have on in the background of your next fall writing day, with soup on the stove.
#18. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Painfully charming and totally screwed up, like all the good things in life are.
#19. Hook (1991)
29% on Rotten Tomatoes?! I am calling THE LAW.
#20. The Princess Diaries (2001)
Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo: Queen of our Hearts
#21. Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Not the slasher film you thought it was as a child… The most misleading cover and main character in cinematic history may be an overstatement, but also maybe not.
#22. Jumanji (1995)
No shade but please don’t get this confused with the recent re-make. Just follow the link.
#23. Knives Out (2019)
If classic who-done-it was a genre. Halloween vibes done right.
#24. Coco (2017)
Pixar didn’t have to go this hard, but I’m thankful.
#25. Casper (1995)
Anyone else not prepared for how sad the story is the first time you watched Casper as an adult…?
#26. Glass Onion (2022)
The cool sister of Knives Out and an absolute mysterious delight.
#27. Maleficent (2014)
Dark and magical without the gore, we love to see it.
#28. Practical Magic (1998)
The alternative watch list was just Practical Magic 31 times.
#29. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001)
If you feel led to watch the other six after this one, follow your heart. They all count.
#30. Double, Double, Toil and Trouble (1993)
Vintage Mary-Kate and Ashley: your kids are going to love you for this if they can get past the special effects. The grandma in that attic mirror went pretty hard in ‘93 though.
#31. Hocus Pocus (1993)
Finishing October the way God intended. Christmas tree is going up as soon as the credits start rolling.
I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.
Us too, Anne. Us too.
