This Sunday is Mother’s Day, which means Target will be sold out of cards and brunch spots will be fully booked by people (first born daughters) who remembered to plan ahead.
But here’s your Thursday reminder that “Mother” is a job title and a verb.
So today, we want to recognize the women who mother - with or without the official title.
The aunt who showed up when your actual mom couldn’t.
The neighbor who always made room at her dinner table.
The big sister who raised you while she was still growing up herself.
The best friend who came to spend the night when your baby wouldn’t stop crying.
The teacher who made you believe in yourself.
The mentor who changed the trajectory of your life.
And yes, the moms who carried, birthed, adopted, lost, fought, hoped, healed, or chose not to.
The world runs on mothering. And the numbers prove it:
80% of women in the U.S. become mothers by age 44 - but nearly 100% of women will mother someone, whether through mentorship, leadership, or friendship.
In homes across the globe, women perform more than 75% of unpaid caregiving - a role that keeps families, economies, and entire communities afloat.
According to the UN, women reinvest up to 90% of their income into their families and communities - compared to 30-40% for men.
When a woman thrives, society rises with her.
If you’ve been mothered, say thank you. If you are mothering, keep going.
We see you. And we’re all better for it.
