If you don't see anyone doing what you want to do...

This one thing may be required of you.

“I GO NEXT! MY TURN!”

-my 3 year old, no less than 15 times at the park this weekend

Even better, he was saying it about things that he doesn’t usually want to do. The big slide. The monkey bars. The weird little spin-y things. I’m sorry that’s vague there are just so many.

The difference was not that the had grown up overnight. Though it does sometimes feel that way.

The difference, I realized, is that the park was packed. The weather was beautiful.

He was watching other kids.

Why is it that watching someone go first in anything has us feeling unstoppable?

Technically, I think it has a lot to do with mirror neurons, but it would be a disservice to everyone if I started talking neuroscience.

Plus, that’s not the point.

If you’ve been alive for more than a minute, you’ve felt the relief and confidence that comes with watching someone else do something before it’s inevitably your turn. Hello, popcorn reading in grade school? Most of our anxiety started there, I stand by that.

That’s also not the news I’m here to break.

I’m here to tell you that the park may not always be crowded.

I’m here to tell you that YOU may have to be the one that goes first.

Yes, even if you’ve never seen it done before. Yes, even if you have no idea what you’re doing.

Especially if you have no idea what you’re doing.

Someone is waiting on you to show them the way.
