Dream Job Unlocked

This week, the first ever full-time "Taylor Swift reporter" was hired at the biggest newspaper chain in the country, USA Today. Weird because I thought I was already performing as that but congrats to Bryan West from Arizona, I guess.

Let's talk about how he did it and look at 3 things we can learn from him that can help you land your dream job:

1. Do not talk about yourself. Talk about the results your skills can bring to the company.

Bryan West complimented USA Today for being pioneers in having a dedicated journalist to one artist, saying that it meant they recognize Taylor's a cultural icon whose fandom will only continue to grow. He then explained why hiring HIM for the job would actually make THEM look good. Idk who needs to hear this but everyone (absolutely everyone) just wants to know what's in it for THEM. Salesgirls and our boy Bryan know that and sell accordingly.

2. Show the receipts!

The human brain lovesssss when we can prove something. As West went through the grueling interview process, he attributes coming out on top to his history as an NBC affiliate reporter where he did all his own writing and filming. That footage of him being a "one man band"? Screams that this guy has done it before and thus he can do it again. He also included pictures and videos of the connections he's had with Swift in the past. The picture above is from them meeting at the Rep Tour Meet and Greet! "They needed cold, hard proof so he gave them some..." Name that song. 😉

3. Remember that interviews are a two-way street.

I know it feels like YOU are the one having night sweats about it and so you're the only one with anything at stake here. But rest assured, an interview is for you AND the employer to see if it's a good fit for BOTH OF YOU. Come prepared to ask questions, not just answer them.

Never give up on your dream job, girls (even if it doesn't exist.... yet!)
