Dunkin's Genius Collaboration Strategies

and what entrepreneurs can learn from it

Dunkin Donuts has announced their newest collab with…. Scrub Daddy?

The only thing that they could possibly have in common is that I love them both.

In addition to being one of my favorite follows on IG for their commitment to keeping things light and early adaptation to what seems like every internet trend, Dunkin is not new to a little shock, awe and head-scratching on social media.

Most especially when it comes to their partnership and collaboration strategies.

Partnerships that would be predictable and make sense for Dunkin:

  • Coffee Mugs

  • Creamers

  • Sweet Treats

Partnerships that Dunkin has actually launched:

This strange but lovable collection of sponges dropped just 5 days before National Donut Day on June 7.

Coincidence? Maybe, but I don’t think so.

I think Dunkin probably (definitely) understands that eyes looking at you wondering ‘what in the world’ are still eyes looking at you.

And having eyes on YOU is kind of the goal when you’re slinging something you can get at a gas station on any corner from home to your office. Or from 1000 other accounts on IG with “Coach” in their bio. 👀

Random as it may seem - you know who drinks coffee? All of us. You know who washes dishes? Unfortunately…. all of us.

For those reasons and the 3 below, I dig it.

3 Things That Dunkin’s Wacky Partnership Strategy Should Mean to You:

#1. Business is Fun

One of the biggest flexes you can have is to not only make your business look fun… but to actually have fun. I’m sorry, you can’t post things like this and make me believe nobody at HQ is having a good time.  4 minute read on why we’re passionate about making work fun again.

#2. Don’t Rule Things Out Too Quickly

Be open, especially when it comes to partnerships and collaborations. If it doesn’t conflict with your morals and beliefs, it might be worth a shot. Worst case scenario, people wonder how on earth you came up with that. I can certainly think of worse things. (Not crossing their minds at all… That is the worse things.)

#3. People Love Exclusive

Like all of Dunkin’s notable collabs, the Scrub Daddy sponges are limited edition and will only be available for a few days. A head-to-toe Dunkin Donut branded tracksuit once sold out in an hour. Don’t underestimate people’s desire to be one of the few that have something.

Salesgirls may not all run on Dunkin, but our brands sure could use a lil more of it.
