I’ve been an active Pinterest user since its inception in 2010.
And somewhere between concepting my dream mason jar wedding and planning every hairstyle I’ve had for the past 15 years, I gained over 6.5k followers.
I genuinely have no idea how Pinterest became my most followed social media platform. Why that many people trusted my taste when I was adding chevron designs to everything from my wardrobe to home office decor in 2010 is beyond me.
There’s probably a glitch in the system but I’m not going to question it.
Instead, I decided to take advantage of it.
I’ve been posting little snippets of my writing for a few years. Because if there’s one thing I know about the audience on Pinterest, it’s that they’re weak for an aesthetically pleasing motivational quote.
I’ve never paid much attention to the engagement. I typically post and ghost. As in, I simply forget I exist as an active Pinterest user for weeks at a time.
But I’m in this new era of throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks when it comes to marketing ideas, so I decided to try something new and run two ads for one week.
Maybe 6.5k people don’t even know what a copywriter does. Or maybe they do and I’m going to hit an untapped market of mine.
Well, the results are in…
I spent around $33 total. Received 12.9k impressions (total number of times my ads were seen on screen). And earned over 50 clicks to my website.
Did these ads convert to any new leads?
No. Not yet at least.
But that many people now know my business exists.
I’ve never run promoted ads on socials before so this felt low stakes to test the waters. Not gaining any new leads does not mean this investment was a failure.
This is why running a business alone is so fun.
I have complete authority over trying new things simply because I’m curious and feel like it. I’ll find what works, leave behind what doesn’t, and decide how to make it better next time.
I think we call this failing forward? Failing fast? Is trying something new even failing at all?
If so, then failing is fun!
