The Olympic Games rarely end without the entire country rallying behind a few new (to most of us) faces.
One of those from the Paris Olympic Games is US Rugby star, Ilona Maher.
In her second Olympics and pursuit of the team’s first medal, she’s been determined to use social media to increase viewership of Women’s Rugby - and it’s working.
But it’s Maher’s personal brand that has us all emotionally invested in a game that we just learned the rules to last week.
Lipstick and positive body image at the cornerstones, I’m not sure what more we could want from a, frankly, badass woman in the spotlight.
“I want you all to take a look at all the different body types on display,” Maher said in a pre-Opening Ceremonies TikTok that’s been viewed more than 4m times.
“All body types matter. All body types are worthy. From the smallest gymnast to the tallest volleyball player, from a rugby player to a shot-putter, a sprinter. All body types are beautiful, can do amazing things. Truly see yourself in these athletes and know that you can do it too.”
I don’t think she was talking to me but I-
She may be stiff-arming women on the sport’s biggest stage, but never without her red lipstick that’s become a signature look, and a token signaling to her brain that: “it’s time to get to work.”
It’s not news to Ilona that there are stereotypes that paint women who play sports as masculine, and I just know she’s had plenty of Instagram comments from Greg63829 and Chad3746 reminding her.
Thankfully she’s never allowed those ideas to shift her reality. Ilona’s bold choice of lipstick allows her to bring her brand of femininity to the field.
“First off, I’ll do what I want” but make it a tattoo.
“I don't like this idea that you have to drop your femininity to play a sport like rugby or any sport.
Through the hashtag #beastbeautybrains, Ilona hopes speaks to women who don’t want to be put into a box, and champions them for being multifaceted.
Ilona has been creating uplifting, relatable and honestly hilarious content for years. We’re so thankful that time caught up and opportunity met preparation.
