Iterate, Don’t Evaporate: A Survival Guide for Female Founders

As Inspired by RedBox. Remember her?

I saw a RedBox machine outside Walgreens this week and it hit me like a DVD to the face: adapt or die.

Not that long ago, RedBox was the innovation. The cool little cousin of Blockbuster who didn’t even need a storefront. You just grabbed your rom-com from outside the gas station and were on your way.

But then… streaming happened. And overnight, people forgot how to return discs (or maybe that was just me).

Here’s the part that matters: Netflix could’ve died too.

Remember when they used to mail you DVDs?

I know this just unlocked memories for somebody who had forgotten.

If you're under 30, that probably sounds like a lie told by elders who also had to walk uphill both ways in the snow. But it’s true. That was their original business model.

And I had DVDs mailed to me in college SO IT WASN’T THAT LONG AGO, I’M SERIOUS.

Then they changed. And changed again. And again.

Now they’re producing Oscar-winning content while RedBox is clinging to the side of a Walgreens, probably wondering what happened.

If your business feels slow, stale, or like it’s not catching on the way it used to - don’t panic. Iterate. Don’t evaporate.

You are not stuck with your first idea. Or your second. My third idea is usually a$$. You’re allowed to evolve. In fact? You’re supposed to!

Just don’t wait until your version of a RedBox is gathering dust next to the Red Nose Day donation bin.

You’re the founder*. Which means you’re also the Chief Reinvention Officer.

(*and if you’re not the founder, then you’re a trusted source inside the organization because you’re here reading this, committed to getting better every weekday morning.)

Need to change your offer? Do it.
Need to raise your prices? Do it.
Need to stop pretending you love 1:1 coaching when you’re dying inside? Gf, do it.

Netflix didn’t become Netflix by trying to keep everyone comfortable.
They just made the next right move. Over and over again.

If something in your business isn’t working… be brave enough to hit eject.
