How to Start Posting and Why You Should
Did you know that LinkedIn posts go viral?
LinkedIn, the stepbrother of all social media platforms, is now kind of relevant in the marketing space.
I’m not sure when it happened, but it’s no longer a graveyard for your resident finance bro to post career updates that are more or less some version of:
“I’m excited to announce I’ve accepted a position at (insert the most boring company name you’ve ever heard). TIME TO KEEP GRINDING. 🚀🚀🚀”
If that makes you cringe, you’re not going to like what’s coming next. Don’t say I didn’t warn you…
I know, it’s so incredibly eye roll worthy. And it went as viral as viral can get on LinkedIn.
I started ghostwriting (gotta pay my bills somehow!) for a few business leaders on LinkedIn this year and this is the formula I use to write every single post:
Hook: 1-2 sentence compelling setup for the post. (“What proposing taught me about B2B sales”)
Meat: 2-3 choppy paragraphs expanding on the hook, delivering information, or actionable insights
Dismount: A memorable summary of the main point
Easy-to-answer question: A quick way people can engage with the post without having to think of how to respond
I was given this format by an avid LinkedIn content creator (a title I just made up), and I can tell you that it’s a proven method if you’re looking to expand your content on a different platform.
A few of my own personal tips, because I’m feeling generous:
Create engagement by posting, network in the DM’s.
If you don’t know where to begin, start in the comment section. Reply, show support, keep it simple.
Lean into storytelling. The posts that perform best are the behind-the-scenes of why you do what you do.
Grow engagement by interacting with every comment.
Be bold with your hook.
Worry less about pitching your business. Focus more on personal anecdotes. Add value first, pitch later.
All this to say, LinkedIn is not just for the corporate 9-to-5 baddies anymore.
Most of my feed is filled with freelancers, entrepreneurs, and writers because that is the network I’ve built brick by brick. I’ve gotten leads just by commenting on posts. It really can be that simple.
TLDR: LinkedIn is not a heavy marketing lift.
And the best part? It’s the only social media platform where follower count doesn’t matter.
Does that help? Sure, it always does.
But it’s not the main focus.
And that is a relief.
