Marketing Doesn’t Always Cost Money... But It Does Cost Nerve
A few weeks ago I was on a call with another freelance copywriter.
I don’t meet many other gals who do the exact same kind of work I do, so I was excited to pick her brain about the wild, wild west of freelancing.
It wasn’t a discovery call or a sales call. Just two girls yapping about how we got into this work, what we love about it, and how we can support each other.
I learned she was in that inevitable freelancing season of trying to find more work because she had recently lost her biggest account.
Of course I asked her about the woes of self-promotion and how she markets herself because it’s the biggest opp I have in my own way.
And she said something that is not a new thought by any means, but it was profound for me in how she approaches the hustle.
“Closed mouths don’t get fed.”
Her marketing strategy? YAPPING – Talking to everyone, reaching out to old clients, and meeting with strangers on Zoom (aka me) to get the word out.
Because duh.
If you don't ask for what you need or want, you're not going to receive it.
Being assertive and communicating to receive what you want or need – that is marketing, babes.
I recently put this proverb to good practice.
I heard one of my friends talking about her friend who owns a marketing company, so I simply made a comment like, “Oh, does she need a copywriter?” Ya know just an easy breezy, nonchalant advertisement for myself.
It prompted her to connect me to her friend, we chatted, and I just joined a networking group that she’s a part of.
Not a dime was spent promoting that ad.
Just me and my willingness to put myself out there.
Promoted social ads, marketing strategies, and email campaigns all work great – there is a ton of value that comes with investing in your business that way.
But, it’s also important to remember that hyping yourself up to other people can be just as valuable.
Talking about myself to other people? Groundbreaking.
Let’s all try it!
