What is the New Carousel Feature on Instagram?

... and how do I use it?

I’m Brooke, co-CEO of multipleddd social media marketing agency. And I’m here to break down the newest Instagram feature so you can use it to Salesgirl to the masses with success, regardless of what you sell!

Who’s ready? 

Y’all know Instagram Carousels have been around for a while, but they’ve NEVER been done like this before. I believe we’re stepping into the HOTTEST Carousel era ever on Instagram for business owners + Creators alike. 🔥

Instagram has been replicating TikTok features a lot over the last couple of years. TikTok has offered Carousel editing within the app for a while now…

Simultaneously, Instagram has become a video-heavy platform since Reels launched in 2020. That said, users have been begging Instagram to bring photo posts back into the algorithm…

If you browse through the Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri’s profile for 10 minutes, you will see people asking about it EVERYWHERE.

Thankfully, Instagram took a page from the Salesgirl book + created a feature based on the feedback their users were giving them. 

(You don’t always have to give the market what they’re asking for, but you always have to KNOW what they’re asking for.)

Instagram’s newest Carousel feature allows users to add Instagram text as well as photo stickers to their Carousel slides.

This new feature is a game changer & here’s why ⬇️

#1. “We tend to develop a preference for things just because we’re familiar with them.” -CXL Article “The Science of Familiarity”

Think about it… when a new social media platform launches, your first thought is to stick to Instagram where you’re comfortable and where it’s familiar. When your team suggests switching to a new communication platform… your first reaction is to feel irritated. Maybe you feel slightly anxious meeting up with new friends or friends you haven’t seen in a while, but you don’t feel that way when you get together with your best friend.

We prefer what’s comfortable, and that goes for social media content consumption as well! That’s why branding is so key — brand recognition builds familiarity! With familiar Instagram font options, you will be able to create that same familiarity within your Carousels!

#2. No graphic design/Canva/Adobe skills necessary 💅

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen sloppy Carousels on Instagram and died a little inside… bad design becomes a MAJOR distraction when consuming content!

Carousels just got much more simple. Simply use photos you’ve taken or solid colored backgrounds that match your branding + add text/photos on top. Use the blue guidelines to ensure your content is properly centered/aligned for visual appeal.

BOOM - You’re done. There’s no need to navigate Canva/Adobe Suites which come with many tools/features. 

#3. Algorithm optimization 📈

The goal of the algorithm is to keep people on the app longer through relevant and interesting content.

Here’s what matters most these days ➡️ keywords, specificity, originality, how helpful the post is, what’s currently trending, and hooking your audience through visuals, sounds, and enticing copy.

You can incorporate ALL the above using Instagram Carousels – include keywords in the text on the post as well as in your caption. Be specific rather than broad with your content topic.

Create content that is unique to you! Source inspiration off the platform from podcasts, books you’re reading, day-to-day life, conversations you’ve had with clients, etc. What Carousel trends are you seeing on the app? Is everyone using a certain hook/post style? Implement it! Use verbiage on the post and at the top of your caption that entices people to keep scrolling through your Carousel or reading your caption. Lastly, add trending audio to your Carousels.

#4. More opportunities for engagement 🙌

Carousels continue popping up in your audience’s feed if they didn’t engage with your post the first time they saw it – The second time it shows up in your audience’s feed, it shows the second slide. The third time it shows up, it shows the third slide.
