Compliments are so in
how to give compliments that make somebody's day, week and year
For Valentine’s Day we got you a skill.
VERY LAME, unless you know that good, genuine compliments build relationships, improve communication, motivate people, boost self-esteem of the person receiving the compliment AND the self-confidence of the person giving the compliment.
So WHYYYYY do only 25% of people report receiving 2-5 compliments per week? That’s not even 1 compliment every other day. The other 75% of people report getting even fewer compliments!
No wonder everyone’s so sad!!!
Compliments are a secret weapon with many depths that really be out here collecting dust for no reason.
They’re a Swiss Army knife and you’re using the bottle opener.
The bottle opener is still valuable but let’s whip out the multipurpose corkscrew and mini screwdrivers just to feel something this Valentine’s Day, deal?
Deal.
5/10 compliments:
I love your hair.
You’re an amazing mom.
You’re a great leader.
I’m obsessed with those shoes.
You light up the room.
Really nice. So sweet. Way better than telling someone that they are the worst. It’s just that they could be better.
You can make a 5/10 compliment a 10/10 compliment with 6 words.
“THE REASON I SAY THAT IS…”
I love your hair. The reason I say that is, it frames your face perfectly!
You’re an amazing mom. The reason I say that is, I can tell by the questions you’re asking that your kids are your #1 priority.
You’re a great leader. The reason I say that is, you really listen to our feedback and I can tell that you take it into account when you lead team meetings.
I’m obsessed with those shoes. The reason I say that is, ballet flats are so in style right now!
You light up the room. The reason I say that is, you’re always the first one to greet me in the mornings at the office and it makes my day.
More genuine. More specific. More believable. Less flattery.
🔥 Hot tip: You can definitely let people know when they’re looking right n tight, just don’t think it’s the only reason you can give or receive a compliment.
Reasons to give compliments that AREN’T about someone’s appearance:
To cushion feedback
To soften a blow of not great news
To get someone’s attention
To give encouragement
To positively reinforce a behavior
While we’re here, ‘accepting compliments’ was on our 2024 IN’s list. Literally all you have to say is thank you when someone compliments you. Lightening doesn’t strike or anything. Promise.
Happy Valentine’s Day, galentines. 💘
