A Note on Deeply Rooted Beliefs
“Dang, this thing was growing deep.”
-My husband, pulling the ugliest weed I’ve ever seen from our flower bed
We like to think of the deep roots on an oak tree. The perfect illustration of determination and growth over time. Poetic, even.
This weekend, I was reminded that weeds can have some pretty deep roots, too.
If I know 1 single thing about weeds (that is actually how many things I know about weeds), it’s that a one-time treatment can make you feel pretty good about things, but you still have to get out there and pluck them if you care about your flower beds enough.
It’s a grave injustice that weeds grow faster and more abundantly than daisies, but I’m glad even nature reminds us that anything worth having will not be what comes easily to us.
Just because something is deeply rooted in your life doesn’t mean it’s good or productive or needs to be there.
Habits, beliefs, systems, attitudes…
It doesn’t matter how they got there or how long you’ve been watering them.
You’re allowed to change your mind.
You really can say: “I used to believe/do/think that, but I don’t anymore,” and the cops will not come for you, believe it or not.
We’re tending to our gardens this year, girls.

Ps. Don’t search “weeds” in GIFs. This email almost went in an entirely different and unwelcome direction.
