Return of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show
Where did it go and what changed now that it's back?
After taking some heat and being canceled in 2019, the iconic and confetti-filled Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show made its return to television on Tuesday night.
The show’s return had it’s highest viewership ever and fans were elated to see their favorite Angels take the cat walk after the six-year hiatus… which begs the question: why did they ever stop?
Well, mostly because of accusations that the production was sexist, outdated and lacked diversity.
That’ll do it…
I want to cry when someone thinks about raising their voice at me. How would they recover from this sort of seemingly fatal faux-pas?
Step 1, they listened. And with the announcement of the show’s return, they let us know that they did.
“We’ve read the comments and heard you,” Victoria's Secret wrote in an Instagram post.
“The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is BACK and will reflect who we are today, plus everything you know and love — the glamour, runway, wings, musical entertainment, and more! Stay tuned… it only gets more iconic from here.”
3 big changes to the re-imagined fashion show this year:
#1. The products you see in the show will actually be for sale.
I think this was to add an aspect of relatability and celebration of the every day woman, but also it just makes sense?
#2. The inclusion of models who are a broader-spectrum of ages and sizes.
If this was to make me feel better about myself, seeing the way Adriana Lima still looks at age 43 did the opposite, but I appreciate them trying.
#3. The show felt more nostalgic than futuristic.
Tyra Banks ending the show in a silver cape and corset top? Get up girls, it’s 2004.
No matter where you fall on the spectrum of opinions, as a business owner, I applaud their efforts to make a come back.
Some viewers are still up in arms, claiming that the changes weren’t enough. You know this will always be the case, right?
It’s always true that what you do won’t be for everyone.
And that’s amazing!
Don’t shoot the messenger but… you and me and Victoria’s Secret should really only concern ourselves with appealing to the people who we want to work with.
You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there's still going to be someone who hates peaches.
Listen, adjust as necessary, keep going.
