Super Bowl 2025 Ads: The Good, The Bad, The Slightly Disturbing

As promised, I’m back in your inbox with a full recap of this year’s Super Bowl commercials. And as Court mentioned yesterday, this will be the last you’ll be hearing about this game…because dedicating any more time talking about men professionally tossing a ball around to win a ring would just be tragic.

In general, there were only a few standout ads that made me feel something and the rest were just okay. Not a super strong year for commercial breaks IMO.
There’s not a theme brands have to follow, but if this year had one why would it have been body parts doing weird things? First the Little Caesar’s commercial with Eugene Levy’s eyebrows … then Tubi with the heads morphing into different kinds of hats … Coffee Mate with the tongue doing whatever that was … and Pringles with the call of the mustaches. Special effects and body hair are a sure way to make an ad stand out, but they didn’t make me feel anything other than slightly disturbed.
Personally, I think the best ads are the kind that tell a story without saying anything at all. Even as a copywriter who appreciates the power words can hold, sometimes the most powerful way to sell your brand is to show, not tell, what you're all about. I thought these two brands tapped into the art of storytelling in a really beautiful way:
Dove – These Legs: A Dove Big Game Film | #KeepHerConfident (Every girl deserves to keep playing the sports they love, yet 1 in 2 girls who quit sports are criticized for their body type. Let’s change the way we talk to our girls.)
LAY’S – The Little Farmer (One little potato. One big dream.)
I love that they leaned into the movement of girlhood and spent millions of dollars to uplift and encourage us, whether it was promoting positive body image or selling potato chips. I didn’t cry, but I could have.
Now for my Top 5 Super Bowl Ads of 2025!!!
These are listed in no particular order. They made it here because they stood out to me with their stellar copy, high-level production, and mega creativity. Obviously this list is subjective.
There were a lot of good ads, but these are the ones I’m still thinking about almost 24 hours later, which means they were just that good.
NIKE – It’d be a shame not to start with So Win. This is the ad I’ve seen all over social media today (Monday) because duh. They’re obviously the GOAT of sports marketing and this ad, including the script, hit all the marks – empowering, creative, and memorable because it was FOR THE GIRLS. 👏👏👏
NOVARTIS – “Your Attention, Please” – This innovative medicine company leaned into the shock factor. If your 12 year old son was watching the game with you, I just know you were sweatingggggg because half of this commercial was tatas in your face until – record scratch – “So much attention. Yet so ignored.” A bold, yet important message spreading awareness about breast cancer. Brilliantly executed and caught my attention from the start. Yet another one for the girls!
JEEP – Owner’s Manual – Please, if Harrison Ford is in your commercial I know it’s going to be great. I didn’t see as many people talking about this one but it made it on my list because of the (shocker) incredible script. Leaning into the storytelling approach, it was more than a car commercial, it was a lesson for America. “Life doesn’t come with an owner’s manual – you have to write your own.” Bravo.
LIQUID DEATH – Safe for Work – They killll at branding always (pun intended) and this was no exception. It was their first time investing in advertising during the Big Game and all they needed was a little jingle and a great tagline to make it one of the most clever ads I saw all night. The caption for this on YouTube says, “We spent millions of dollars running this commercial just to make you smile. The least you can do is give it a watch and pretend to love it.” And that just sums up what kind of brand they are – it’s not that serious, it’s just water. I knew they’d slay.
ROCKET.COM – Take Me Home Rocket – This commercial surprised me in the best way because I didn’t expect this good of an ad from a mortgage company. Not a single word or script, just a great song and emotional storytelling. I want to know how much they dished out to get the Caesar Superdome to seamlessly transition out of their ad into the entire football arena singing Take Me Home, Country Roads. A collective and memorable ad experience for everyone watching at home and at the game. So well done, I think it needed more recognition for the execution and creativity.
