The 1 Sentence Identity Crisis No One Warned You About

There’s one question that ruins dinner parties, family reunions, and small talk with strangers at the airport:

“Sooo, what do you do?”

If you’re an entrepreneur - or in the middle of becoming one - this question is weirdly hard.

Because how do you sum up:

  • Your job title (which you made up)

  • Your purpose (which you’re still figuring out)

  • Your passion (which changes shape monthly)

  • And your revenue streams (which don’t always sound impressive on paper)
    in one neat sentence?

You want to say something clear… but not boring.
Powerful… but not cringey.
True… but not the whole TED Talk.

Repeat after me:

I are not confused. I are complex.

And that’s a good thing.

It means you’re building something real.
It means you’re doing work that doesn’t always fit in a box.
It means your answer might change, because your life is changing.

But in the meantime? You still deserve to walk into every room like a woman who knows exactly who she is.

So here’s a cheat code:

When someone asks what you do, try this:

“Right now I’m building a business that helps ____.”
“I work for myself—I help people _______.”
“I’m a creative / strategist / service provider who’s obsessed with _______.”

Or just smile and say:

“It’s kind of hard to explain. But I love it.”

Because you don’t owe anyone a perfectly branded explanation.

And you don’t need to prove your job is “real” to be proud of it.

PS. The next time someone gives a perfectly packaged answer like “Oh, I’m in finance” - remember, they probably practiced. You’re just still writing yours. And that’s where the fun is.
