The Two Directions of Growth in Business

Trees grow in 2 directions.

They grow gravitropically and they grow phototropically.

Please don’t ask me how many tries it took to spell those I lost count at 4 and I’m still not sure it’s right but the point we’re getting to is good.

Gravitropically

When a seed goes down into the ground, it must grow roots, germinate and get nutrients. This is gravitropic growth - it means the seed grows away from light and towards gravity.

(If gravitropical growth were a song, think: Down Bad by Taylor Swift)

This is the underground work. This is the work that no one sees. These are the bricks you lay, one by one, day by day.

Every page you read, workout you complete, podcast you listen to, presentation you create, conversation you have, and failure you experience.

This is the downward growth.

Frankly, no one cares about it, and certainly, no one is applauding you for it.

It doesn’t matter whether they care or not: The seed must grow down BEFORE it grows up.

Photoropically

A tree also has phototrophic growth. Photoropic is growth away from gravity and towards the light. This is its strong branches and budding flowers in the spring.

(If photoropical growth were a song, think: Up! By Shania Twain)

This is what makes people get out their cameras or pull over their cars. This is the healthy body, the personal record, the sales made, the Instagram following, the money in the bank account, and the dream home.

This is what people see and instantly want. They might even pursue entrepreneurship because of the desire to have these things.

Salesgirls know that this growth comes by becoming the right person that does the right things in order to have the desires we want

Those things – in that order.

Don’t be so busy worried about how your branches and buds look, that you forsake the actions that create them.

The higher the hair, the closer to God.

The deeper the roots, the bigger the blooms.
