The Year of the Girl
Historians are declaring 2023 The Year of the Girl.
Finding success, building businesses, creating luck, breaking records, having fun, having babies and looking good while doing it all.
In offices, in theaters, on stages, on fields, in space??? We were undeniable. Everywhere.
Here are 10 times this year that we were so proud to be women… to be girls… to be Salesgirls.
#1. The first woman earns a spot and flys with the Blue Angels.
I’m trying to think of something.. anything.. that would be cooler than this and I’m coming up short. Before Lt. Amanda Lee, no woman has flown with the iconic flight demonstration squadron of the US Navy in its 76 year history. As someone who cries in a flyover under any circumstance already, I believe this would do me in to witness.
#2. The Eras Tour and the reign of Taylor Swift
May this year be remembered as the one where a pop star put the entire US economy on her back. The Eras Tour is the first tour ever.. by anyone.. to bring in $1 Billion and it’s said to have boosted the economy by as much as $4.6 Billion. Many, many millions of her earnings were paid out as bonuses to the truck drivers and team on tour. I am proud to have contributed as if it were my civli duty.
#3. Barbie at the Box Office
An ode to American girlhood was the highest grossing film of the year. I am one of 10 people worldwide who have still not seen the film, but the sense of comraderie among women donning pink everywhere for a month straight was inspiring.
#4. What’s on the menu? Girl Dinner
The viral phenomenon exposing our biological love for a meal that requires absolutely no effort, dirties no dishes and seemingly makes no sense. Piece of bread, slice of cheese and a pickle? Honey Nut Cheerios with the last of the milk? Crackers, carrots and a log of goat cheese? An apple, peanut butter and a Diet Coke on ice? Girlllll dinnerrrrrrr.
#5. Janet Truncale becomes the First Female CEO of Big Four Firm
Janet started as an intern at Ernst & Young years ago and can now boast being one of the most senior women in the corporate world. Inspiring seems like an understatement. I don’t know much about big finance, but if Ernst & Young becomes the front runner in the pool of Big Four Firms after having the only female CEO, I will pretend to be surprised.
#6. Alix Earle is named ‘it’ girl of TikTok
It’s such a treat when someone who is kind and funny randomly becomes famous. That’s what happened with Alix Earle. She taught us how to aggressively curl our eyelashes and she single-handedly put gasoline on the spark that is the #GRWM (get ready with me) trend. What we love most about Alix is how she’s giving back with her newfound fame. The University of Miami unveiled a scholarship in Alix’s name to provide financial assistance to students with potential in business and entrepreneurship. It’s giving Salesgirl.
#7. Girls takeover the International Space Station
Jasmin Moghbeli and Loral O’Hara, of NASA, completed the 4th-ever all-female spacewalk. From the comfort of my bed, I googled what a spacewalk even actually is… and it’s exactly what it sounds like. Astronauts walk in space, outside the safety of the space station, to perform exterior repairs. These walks are dangerous, physicallly demanding and rare. They chose the right girls for the job.
#8. Largest crowd in the history of the world watched a women’s sporting event
Yep. The largest crowd to witness a women's sports event filled Memorial Stadium, as 92,003 fans watched the five-time NCAA champion Nebraska volleyball team beat Omaha 3-0. They broke the record in August and I remember weeping watching the coverage like it was yesterday.
#9. Girl Math… the only one I ever passed with flying colors
Yet another trend that united us all because all girls know that when you return clothes that you bought you are actually MAKING money. I had no idea men didn’t think this way? What are they gonna tell me next? That Apple Pay uses my actual money? Get out.
Last and definitely least…
#10. Salesgirl Social launched on a whim.
We haven’t even been together 2 months yet and I’d already die for you. Let’s keep this thing rolling, shall we?
For the last time in 2023…
