I’m a podcast girly. Something about a long walk with a good listen makes me feel something.
And I've found that listening to podcasts with other writers and creatives (both men + women - shocking, I know!) doing the work I aspire to do has been more influential than most books I’ve read about writing.
There’s just something about hearing the stories and struggles of people in the arena doing the hard work of sharing their art that keeps me motivated to keep going in this industry.
So, I want to share a few episodes that have stuck with me in hopes that you’ll be inspired by them too.
If you’re thinking – but I’m not a writer or a creative so I’m not going to waste my time listening to something that won’t be helpful for me – I’d like to encourage you to stay open and curious.
Hearing how someone in a completely different industry approaches work and life might just give you the spark of inspiration you’ve been looking for in your own regularly scheduled programming.
Warning: I included some episodes of men who have access to microphones and podcast equipment. There are a select few good ones out there that I look up to, and I think you’ll be okay with the ones I’ve chosen to (apprehensively) add to this list.
Head writer and executive producer for Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Oscars. Fun fact – she’s also married to Jimmy Kimmel. This episode covers her background, how fast-paced producing for late-night tv can be, and what it feels like to work closely with her partner. I loved her and this episode so much!!
Judd has directed and produced all the comedy movies you know and love. He’s a brilliant writer and seems like such a down-to-earth dude. In this episode, they chat about why laughter creates connection, the thin line between grief and humor, and what it means to write the stories of our lives to create human connection. I’ll listen and watch anything Judd touches.
Does Jerry even need an introduction? A brilliant comedian and writer. There’s simply no one like him. This podcast feels chaotic because it’s four men with a microphone but if you can stand it, I think you’ll enjoy hearing his perspectives about life, career, and the creative process behind writing just one joke.

Amanda is an author, writer, podcaster that I adore and respect. Her podcast covers the topics we’re all overthinking including adult friendships, people pleasing, and this episode about career jealousy really hit home for me. Not just for writers and creatives! Out of all the episodes on this list, I hope you’ll give this one a listen.
Enjoy!
I love a good podcast swap, so if there’s any you’ve heard that features women (or men) in a field outside of my own and felt inspiring for you, I’m always looking for new recs. Send ‘em my way!
