Mr. Irrelevant No More

Brock Purdy's journey from dead last pick to Super Bowl starter

The very last pick in the NFL Draft earns himself the nickname “Mr. Irrelevant.”

It gets printed on the back of their draft jersey, it gets its own post on ESPN’s social media, the whole bit. It’s tradition.

The nickname began in 1979 when former player, Paul Salata, was determined to find a way to celebrate the guy who was taken last. Despite the final pick rarely going on to even secure a spot on an NFL roster, much less lead a storied career. I guess that’s what they mean by irrelevant.

Everyone can laugh because getting drafted into the NFL at all is an incredible feat that only a staggering 0.016% of people can ever boast.

It’s like flying coach to the Maldives instead of first class. You’re still headed to the Maldives, just with less leg room.

In 2022, Mr. Irrelevant was Brock Purdy, quarterback out of Iowa State University.

Last night, he was starting quarterback in Super Bowl for the San Francisco 49ers.

For some, watching sports is an escape. For others, it’s an inspiring reminder of what’s possible in our own lives.

Congratulations to Mr. Irrelevant on making himself very, very relevant. May we all follow suit.

Anyways, it’s crazy how Usher actually won the game, right?
